The novel Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson starts with the main character David Balfour going on an adventure to find himself. David is a seventeen year old boy from Essendean, Scotland and both of his parents are dead and he no longer has a reason to stay in Essendean. Before leaving he meets with Mr.Campbell, the minister of the town and a friend of David's father, who wants David to take a letter to the House of Straws in Cramond. Before taking this letter to Ebenezer Balfour, his uncle, Mr.Campbell gives David his fathers left over money, a shilling, bible, and a healing ointment recipe. David heads to Cramond asking around to see where he can find the house of straws he's looking for but people aren't giving him much help. He comes to someone who gives him some information but tells him that his uncle wasn't very popular in the town which makes David upset. He figures his uncle is a mean guy and almost decides to go home but he continues anyway.
What was David's expectations of his uncle and why was he so disappointed in what he found out?
David gets to the house and is answered to his uncle with a gun in his hand. He expects the person who answered the door to be a servant but it was actually his uncle. Davids hope was to have a wealthy family members that would help him and David begins to get angry. The uncle decides to go out but tells David that he'll have to lock him out when he leaves but David said that he'll leave if he does so and that causes the Uncle not to leave. David finds a book that his father signed dedicated to his Uncle and asks if him and his father were brothers and to avoid answering starts to become upset about his brothers death and this only confuses David more.
I'm very suspicious about Davids uncle. He seems like he has something to hide and he isn't giving David much information and hopefully he opens up to David later in the book.
After reading the first few chapters i caught an instant connection with this book between David and Peter Parker from spiderman. Both teens who lost their parents at a young age and had to live with family members. In Davids case it is his uncle Ebenzer and in Peters case it was his uncle Ben.
As like Joe I also read this book. I would recommend this book to someone who wants a good quick read. I was surprised that Ebenenzer was so rude and hateful to his nephew. I also kind of feel bad since he doesnt have the money to fix up his run down house.
ReplyDeleteDavid probably had expectations to find out that his uncle was this popular guy that everyone liked. David thought that is uncle was loved by everybody in the town. Once he gets there he realizes that he wasn't really a guy that was admired. David is upset by this because he thought otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why David expected his uncle to be a wealthy and popular man. It seems like David is really only concerned about finding money to make his own life better, not to find himself. He should still want to learn about who is uncle is and why the town is not very fond of his uncle. If he wants to find himself by finding out information from family members he shouldn't become so angry and disappointed when things don't turn out the way he expects. He should be prepared for any outcome. Does David's actual motive for finding and living with his uncle actually have to do with a need of greed?
ReplyDeleteFinding yourself is a task everyone must go through and David wants to find himself going on this expedition. Along what Alexa said, I felt David was being selfish because this expedition was for him to find himself but instead, he wants to go find a long lost uncle to see what he can get off of him. I felt like if David actually wanted to find himself he could've just done work to earn money and lived alone but instead he goes to find a place to stay with a stranger.
